I just don't understand Tesla. They had a brand, massive capital, and an 8 year head start on electrification. Then they piss it all away. A series of escalating poor decisions just compounding on themselves. All of that faith and fervor ending in a billion dollar fart joke.

Doesn't this have something to do with Elon not really having an interest in running a car company?

Much of Tesla's massive valuation is based on everything it's trying to do...not what it's currently doing. I've always thought Elon sees the future of Tesla in one of two ways. Either they deliver on all their other projects and justify the massive valuation (and it then goes even higher) or they just end up being a car company and Elon walks away.

I always thought that their main promise came from becoming an energy company. No more diesel, no more gas, no more coal. It was a future of jet black solar panels and lithium batteries. An end to buying oil from foreign adversaries and endless smog.

Now they are a software company? Or are they a Robotaxi provider? Or a robot company?

They're trying all these things. But, to me, the Robotaxi service seems the most promising as it dovetails nicely into the auto infrastructure they've built and it can scale quickly as they can produce vehicles at a scale Waymo is nowhere near. But they still have a long way to go.
